RS1HD - RuneScape Classic Remake

Hello,
I think it's time for me to announce this project that has been on-going for about a year, it has not been a high priority project so it's been slowly turning into something. This project is a quite big achievement for me, and to my knowledge nobody else has ever made significant progress on their RSC rewrite projects and they always have dropped it at early stages.

The goal of this project is to write RuneScape Classic into new game engine from scratch using modern technology such as GPU rendering with OpenGL. This rendering technology opens a lot of possibilities, we could say the possibilities are limitless... BUT! Another goal is to maintain the RuneScape Classic integrity and feel. Even though we could easily switch to smoothly animated characters and high definition assets(or use ones from RS2), that's not what we want to do because that is not what runescape classic is!

  • All of RS Classic UI's have been created from scratch
  • Everything from scratch and loots more. I'll fill in later

The project is in a state where you can connect to official RSCRevolution Server and play just as you would play with original client, only some minor features are missing.

Awesome to see.  What OpenGL version are you targeting?  I assume you'll keep OpenGL ES 2.0 compatibility for the Android version?  Maybe even GL 2.0 core?

To be honest I have not thought that far yet, but main goal is to target as many platforms as possible. I've pretty much just used this project to learn new concepts, but I'm making the best I can out of it.

Looking good, especially if this is your first endeavor with OpenGL.  I can't really envision the RS1 using anything beyond the most basic shaders... Really, just vertex/index buffer objects... No need for FBOs, which most mobile devices (should) support now anyway.

DM me on discord (tylenol) if you run into any GL specific issues (it looks like you're using lwjgl, which should be using straight wrappers for the spec, and I haven't touched Java in years), but it looks like you have basically everything down for the core game already.

This is actually really cool from a technology prespective.  Congrats!

We can take better performance, higher fps, less latency, development step further, be more creative and less limited in what we can do. If I can convince our userbase that this is good change and we can ditch the old client then also the new engine allows for more rapid development

Horse skill mechanics (cause we aint running with 99 agility)

Summon horse with mage spell.

Horse can run a predetermined distance that increases with agility lvl

After horse gets tired it will disappear

Horse cannot be used in wild ofc

Let's not forget this either. That's a link to (AFAIK) the first announcement of a similar milestone in the RSC scene, the APK, also done originally by n0m. Just read the thread, it reminds me so much of this one lol.
